Blue Elephant Capital Management is an active investment manager in the alternative fixed income space. The management team seeks out best-in-class lending opportunities using its expertise in asset management and credit modeling. To date Blue Elephant has financed over $150 million in small balance loans. The firm partners with originators by providing debt capital and working to improve underwriting with a quantitative edge. Blue Elephant was established in 2013 in New York.
Chief Executive Officer
JP Marra is seasoned in fixed income trading and the capital markets, having spent over 22 years leading multinational teams on a range of debt instruments. Prior to co-founding Blue Elephant, JP was head of cash rates trading at Nomura Securities in New York, which included primary dealer, repo, agency, inflation-linked and frequent borrower businesses. He led a global team of 100 as head of High Grade Rates at Banc of America, and ran the Treasury, mortgage pass-through and agency trading desks at Lehman Brothers.
Chief Operating Officer
For nearly a decade, Blue Elephant co-founder Ashees Jain has been managing portfolios and trading complex financial securities, such as structured products, hybrids and derivatives. Previously, Ashees was the executive director of underwriting and trading agency callable and rates structured notes at Nomura Securities in New York. He also traded derivatives-based securities while a vice president at Barclay’s Capital. Ashees began his career as a financial services consultant with Deloitte Consulting.
Chief Investment Officer
Brian Weinstein is an experienced financial executive with a career spanning 17 years in fixed-income trading and asset allocation. As a managing director on BlackRock’s fixed income team, he most recently served as head of multi-sector fixed income. In this capacity, he oversaw 40 investors managing more than $300 billion in assets across short duration, financial institutions and multi-sector fixed income portfolios. He worked extensively with pension funds, endowments, insurers and other institutional clients. Brian has a long history in understanding long-term valuation trends across the spectrum of fixed income instruments, and was a senior member of the team that established BlackRock’s perspective on fixed income investing. Brian earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Pennsylvania.
Director of Credit
Kent MacWilliams is Director of Credit at Blue Elephant. He has over 10 years of fixed income experience across a number of financial vehicles including structured products, US corporate credit and direct asset-based lending. Kent spent the first 9 years of his career at UBS, most recently as a Portfolio Manager where he jointly managed over $800 million in structured products and whole loans on behalf of the Swiss National Bank. As a Portfolio Manager, Kent specialized in risk management, cash flow modeling/calibration and market surveillance. Before his portfolio management role, he held a variety of positions within the bank including Head of Fund Treasury & Reporting, Valuations Specialist (US credit) and business unit controller (Municipals). Prior joining Blue Elephant, Kent spent a year co-founding a boutique project finance and consulting business that focused on Financial Services, Renewable Energy and other direct asset based investments. He is also a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM) from the Global Association of Risk Professionals.
Director of Quantitative Strategy
Jason is a portfolio manager with 8 years of buy-side experience spanning alpha capture, statistical arbitrage and discretionary trading. He has deep quantitative expertise in developing systematic investment strategies around alpha, risk, optimization and execution. His recent work has focused on applying machine learning methods in a mean-reversion setting. At Blue Elephant, Jason will spearhead the quantitative underwriting effort for portfolio management. Prior to Blue Elephant, Jason was the Portfolio Manager and Product Head for Marshall Wace’s innovative Americas TOPS fund. He spent three years at Trisun Capital Management as a generalist fundamental analyst. Jason has also worked as a data-mining analyst at Xanga.com and as a research analyst at the Kahana Computational Memory Lab. Jason graduated Brandeis University in 2001 with a double major in Neuroscience and Philosophy and a minor in computer science. Jason has passed the CFA levels I & II.
Director of Marketing and Investor Relations
Brooke has over eight years of experience in the financial services industry, primarily in trading and selling fixed income. Most recently Brooke served as the executive director of underwriting and trading short-duration U.S. Agency and Treasury debt at Nomura Securities in New York, where she jointly managed $4 billion in inventory. Through her career she has focused on the build-out of front end trading operations, notably the development and maintenance of relationships with institutional asset managers. Prior to Nomura, she spent several years trading this sector at Banc of America Securities in New York. Brooke began her career in 2005 as an analyst at Goldman Sachs producing margin and collateral lending services for Prime Brokerage operations in New York, London and Hong Kong. She holds a B.S.E. in Industrial Engineering from University of Michigan and has received Series 7 and 63 securities licenses.
